TLC Diet is Therapeutic lifestyle changes diet recommended by American Heart Associaton (AHA), also known low cholesterol diet designed by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).

This diet program focuses on the consumption of a balanced daily intake of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, people who are the victims or at high risk for heart disease can adopt this diet.

  • 25 -35 % of either saturated or unsaturated fat.
  • Unsaturated fats are the “good” fats
    Saturated fats are the “bad” fats

  • Foods rich in complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits & vegetables.
  • include vegetables, pasta, and whole wheat bread. In this diet, carbohydrates should comprise between 50 to 60 percent of your total calories each day.

  • 10 -25 grams of soluble fiber.
  • Protein consist of 15 percent of your total caloric intake.
  • 2 g/ day of plant derived sterols.
  • Balance energy intake & expenditure to maintain optimum body weight and/or prevent weight gain.
  • These diet program seems complicated to maintain because of the guidelines that you should follow strictly. However, it basically encourages eating a heart-healthy, balanced diet and lowering cholesterol through decreased fat intake and increased consumption of fiber.
